Between the 25th July and the 11th September 1714, the city of Barcelona fell to hands of the Franco-Castilian troops in the War of Succesion to the Hispanic crown.
With this defeat, Catalonia lost its National Government Institutions, Generalitat and Les Corts.
In the Succesion war, people fought to achieve the Hispanic Crowns.
The candidates were Felip V of Borbó and the archduke Carles of Austria.
The winner of the war was Felip V of Borbó after a bleeding battle.
The defeat meant a recentralitzation and a total dependence from Madrid.
Nowadays, in spite of the defeat, Catalonia celebrates this date because it has become a symbol of the Catalonia willigness of wanting to continue existing as a nation.
The 11th September it's the National date in Catalonia.
Along the day there are demonstrations, concerts and informatives. All of them are based on a reclaiming and festive nature.
Many citizens hang a flag or a "estelada" on their balcony.
The hymn of Catalonia is also sung: "Els Segadors".
In the last years a very popular demonstration is made where the independence of Spain is claimed.
